of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

-ever head-to-head matchup between president and his republican challenger, the obama camp is probably somewhat grateful that you didn't. but if you did catch it, you may not be surprised by numbers like these. two-thirds of debate watchers polled by cnn and orc believe that mitt romney bested the president. that is the biggest win of any presidential debater since we first started asking the questions of that back in 1984. check out this number. 82% said that mitt romney did better than they expected, but only 1 in 10 said he did worse. as for the president's performance, 6 in 10 say that he did worse than expected. just 2 in 10 said he actually did better. cnn's dana bash joins me now with more about the stats and the sound bites and to borrow a line from our friend and our colleague james carville, the president wanted a conversation, but mitt romney showed up with a chain saw. how are things going within the various xamps today and how is everybody breaking this down? the narrative today. >> the narrative today is simply that, you know, going into yesterday, there were republicans

're learning that the obama campaign raked in a whopping $181 million in september. that is the most either side has raised in a single month this election cycle. no word yet on the romney camp's monthly total, but the campaign does say it collected more than $12 million in online donations. that is just since wednesday's debate. team romney is also rolling out a new tv ad today, featuring a former obama supporter, who says she has changed his mind. >> i'm disappointed in barack obama as my president, because he promised to bring us all together. and we're all going to be able to prosper. i don't see the prospering. >> and big news out of ohio, where an appeals court has upheld a ruling that reinstates early voting on the final three days before election day. the ruling means that people in ohio can continue to cast their ballots up until election day, depending on the decisions of local election boards. it's a win for the obama campaign, which has filed a lawsuit arguing everyone should be able to vote on those days. we'll have more on all these stories throughout the next three hours. >>>

romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that debate the gravitas of being the president
